Design work has begun on the fiber-optic infrastructure for the development of Latvia’s external border crossing points

Work continues on the development of modern border crossing solutions, and the project executed  by Latvia State Radio and Television Center (hereafter – LVRTC), “Implementation of the first phase of border crossing solutions,” has reached a significant milestone – design work has begun on the construction of the optical and power supply network infrastructure.

The LVRTC optical network will be one of the key elements ensuring stable, fast and secure data transmission between the Grebņeva, Terehova and Pāternieki border checkpoints and information systems. This is an essential prerequisite for the full implementation of the Electronic Queue Reservation System (ERRS) and the replacement of the temporary reservation system solution.

“It is precisely a stable data transmission network that ensures the system can process large volumes of information in real time regarding vehicle traffic, reservations, and border crossing capacity. Consequently, the optical infrastructure that has been built will serve as the technological foundation that allows the electronic queue to operate effectively, reducing wait times, improving traffic management, and making border crossings more convenient for all users. Without such infrastructure, modern and effective border management is not possible, so the start of design work is a significant prerequisite for the project’s future development,” emphasizes Kārlis Siliņš, Director of the Commercial Department at LVRTC.

The expansion of the optical and power supply networks is being carried out as a part of the European Union co-funded project “Implementation of the first phase of border crossing solutions,” with the aim of improving the management of Latvia’s external borders as well as those of the European Union.

The project aims to develop not only digital solutions but also the physical infrastructure that supports these solutions, thereby creating a unified and sustainable technological environment. Expanding the infrastructure will provide long-term benefits, as it will not only improve the operation of existing systems but also create opportunities to implement new technological solutions in the future.

The overall objective of Phase 1 of the project is to equip road border crossing points on the external borders of Latvia and the European Union with effective traffic management systems, as well as to introduce advance electronic registration for border crossings, and to ensure the mutual integration of technical equipment and information systems.

The total funding for the first phase of the project is 2 820 000 Euros, of which 2 397 000 Euros is provided by the European Regional Development Fund, while 423 000 Euros is co-financing from the state budget. A contract has been signed with The Central Finance and Contracting Agency (CFCA) for the implementation of the project, which ensures the administration and supervision of the European Union funding, as well as the project’s compliance with established requirements.
