Starting February 1, 2025, the eParaksts mobile app will no longer be supported on devices running Android 8 or iOS 13 and earlier versions.

To ensure user security and comply with the requirements for trust and electronic identification services, as well as regulatory standards, SJSC Latvia State Radio and Television Center (LVRTC) announces that starting February 1, 2025, the eParaksts mobile app (from version 1.32.1), eParakstsLV app (from version 1.0.16), and eID Scan app (from version 1.0.3) will only support Android 9 and iOS 14.0 and newer versions.

Users currently accessing the apps on devices with Android 8 or iOS 13 (or earlier versions) will still be able to use the existing app versions – eParaksts mobile (1.32.0), eParakstsLV (1.0.15), and eID Scan (1.0.2). These versions will allow actions such as changing PIN1, PIN2, and eParaksts password or renewing an e-Identity. However, users will not be able to update to newer app versions. It is estimated that these older app versions will remain functional on these devices for at least another year.

Given the potential vulnerabilities of outdated devices, LVRTC encourages users who rely on eParaksts but are unable to upgrade to a newer smart devics to use an eID card instead for enhanced security.

Currently, approximately 2,500 eParaksts mobile users have the app installed on devices running Android 8.0 or 8.1, while fewer than 100 users are on devices with iOS 13.0–13.7. Overall, fewer than 1% of eParaksts mobile and similar app users rely on outdated operating systems.

Security First

Since 2021, Android 8 and 8.1 have stopped receiving security updates, and iOS 13 has not been updated since 2020. Android 8, in particular, has over 100 publicly known critical and high-risk vulnerabilities that could allow unauthorized access to data on devices and apps. Without security updates, the risk of cyberattacks, data breaches, and other security issues increases significantly.

Using devices with unsupported operating systems for five years or more compromises the secure use of digital tools and fails to meet the safety standards required for trust and electronic identification services, as set by Latvian and European Union regulations.

Since eParaksts tools issued by LVRTC provide digital identity verification with the same legal standing as in-person document verification, users are encouraged to switch to devices with supported and regularly updated operating systems. If that’s not possible, they should use an eID card instead for their daily needs.

Looking ahead, LVRTC plans to further restrict the use of its services on devices with outdated operating systems. In February 2026, support for eParaksts mobile apps on Android 9 and iOS 14 is also planned to end.

It’s important to note that using devices with significantly outdated operating systems can cause compatibility issues with newer apps and services, leading to technical errors and reduced device performance. Older systems cannot support the latest app features and improvements, and over time, developers stop maintaining compatibility with outdated versions to focus on enhancing newer ones.

What Changes on February 1, 2025?

Users with devices running Android 8 or iOS 13 will still be able to use the current versions of the apps (eParaksts mobile 1.32.0, eParakstsLV 1.0.15, and eID Scan 1.0.2). They will also be able to change PINs and eParaksts passwords or renew their e-Identity.

However, app updates to newer versions will not be available for these devices. To protect your data and ensure ongoing compatibility and security, LVRTC strongly recommends upgrading to a device with a supported and regularly updated operating system.
